FOOD PRODUCTION WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Ice Cream, Dairy, Cheese, Salad Dressing, Mayonnaise, and other food producing processes generate significant amounts of wastewater. This wastewater contains organic contaminants:

  • High BOD/COD
  • High Amounts Oil & Grease
  • High Total Suspended Solids
  • High Total Dissolved Solids

Most of these contaminants can be removed from the waste water and used as a by-product in other industries. If the waste treatment system is designed correctly, it will reduce disposal costs and generate income from the sale of the removed contaminants.

Depending on the ingredients and the process used, wastewater will contain traces of process ingredients. In ice cream production each change of flavor requires a complete production line wash. Wastewater generated during these washes contains sugar, milk fat, and butter. All these residual products wastes have significant value. Technology developed by Amrutech allows recycling all or part of the treated water back into the process or to be use for on-site irrigation. Wastewater can be treated to remove contaminants to below NPDES discharge limitations.

Depending on the particular application and desired final results, specific treatment technologies or a combination of technologies can be used for waste treatment. After collection and equalization, the wastewater is pumped through a strainer (screen) to remove any large particles. After screening, the wastewater enters pretreatment unit, where fat and part of the suspended solids are removed. The wastewater then enters the first stage membrane treatment system. The permeate (clean water) is sent for recycling or discharge to the local POTW. The concentrate is sent to a second stage membrane system for further concentration. From the second membrane treatment system pre-concentrated wastewater is combined with solids removed during pretreatment, and the total volume of waste solids is reduced further by means of a high efficiency vacuum concentrator. The final product is about 75% solids. If desired, the use of a dryer can increase the solids content further. The membrane technology which Amrutech's engineers implement for particular applications is simple and reliable. There are many inexpensive ways to take care of your waste treatment problems. Amrutech, Inc. is in business to insure that you choose the most appropriate system.
