OILY WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Amrutech, Inc. has developed and successfully installed several treatment systems for various wastewater streams contaminated with oil and heavy metals. These wastewater treatment systems significantly reduce volume of the wastewater produced from spent coolants, parts washer baths, air compressor condensate, and mop water. Whenever the oily wastewater is contaminated with heavy metals (lead, nickel, zinc, chromium, etc.) it cannot be discharged to the POTW even after oil is removed, since most of the metals will remain in the water. The treatment systems developed by Amrutech allow removal of metal contaminants along with oil . This treatment process reduces the concentration of heavy metals and oil so that water can be discharged after processing without additional treatment. In some cases, Amrutech, Inc. uses membrane technology to aid in the processing of oily wastewater.

Membrane technology is simple and very reliable. The membranes separate the wastewater into two streams. One (the concentrate) contains oil and heavy metals and the other (permeate) - clean water. During the membrane concentration process emulsified oil coagulates into free oil. Oil skimmers are used to remove this oil. Unlike conventional filters, which have to be replaced after filling, membranes can be washed repeatedly. If the membrane system is maintained properly, the same membranes can stay in service for several years. Some applications are straightforward and installation of single membrane system solves the problem. Other applications are more complex and require pre- and post treatment. Amrutech is capable of developing the treatment process most appropriate for client needs, reliably and cost–effectively. Our engineers run a field pilot tests and upon completion, will demonstrate the developed technology on-site.

Amrutech has been working with various equipment manufacturers, including Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. one of the leaders in membrane development and manufacturing, in the application of membrane technology to waste treatment. For oily wastewater two types of Koch’s membrane systems have proven to be effective: tubular membrane systems Konsolidator and compact hollow fiber membrane systems ROMI-KON.
